Seeking information on TOM CURRY, for whom the county is supposed to be
named.
I really need to know more about the genealogy of this family. How can I get
that information? I think this Curry family came from Texas, but not sure.
Pat Hardison hardison@xroadstx.com
Following is the answer to Pat Hardison on who Curry County was named for:
Hi Pat:
Following is the person that Curry County was named for. It is a quote
from
our Curry County History book.
"They picked out a man that was the most likely to be known in Santa Fe,
Uncle Charley C. A. Scheurich. He was a very close friend of the then
governor of the territory, George Curry. Two other men went with him: Frank
P. Helm and R. E. Rowells.
It was already known that when Charley Scheurich got up to Santa Fe and
told the Governor about his mission to get a new county, that it would be
named after him, Curry County. Of course this move cinched the Governor on
Charley's side. At the time the bill passed Governor Curry was in
Washington. Charley Scheurich, knowing a lot of people in Santa Fe as he
did, managed to get hold of that bill after it had gone through due process
and he fliched it. At this time is was not unheard of for a bill to get
lost in the Santa Fe mill. Charlie did nothing crooked. He just located the
bill, put it in his pocket after it had been processed through the House
and the Senate and brought it back to Clovis with him. After Governor Curry
returned from Washington, Charley entrusted the bill to B. F. Craig and
another friend and they returned it to Santa Fe for the Governor's
signature."
Thank you for your interest in this area.

buried in Melrose Cemetary. John LECOMPTE ,Jr. is also buried there
(probably brother of Henry?). My mother thinks that their father,
Louis? LECOMPTE lived in Melrose also, and that he was injured in a fall

Greenlee LECOMPTE, was married to Sam KETCHUM, brother of Black Jack

I am seeking information on Will TAYLOR. I believe he was a long time
resident of Clovis, was married to Martha Elizabeth OTTS. She was born
Aoril 15, 1884, died September 14, 1956 and is buried in Portales City
Cemetery. I have an old newspaper clipping entitled "Ghost of Old Will
Taylor is Happier" by Dave Thornton. I have no idea how old the article
is. This article concerns the clean up of Taylor's Grove by 4-Hers,
American Legion and Friendship Club. Property was also owned by Eddie
White who let picnickers use the spot. The article indicates that Will
TAYLOR homesteaded this place. I am interested in any other history of
Taylor's Grove. Also would like to know the death date and where Will
is buried. I assume he and Martha are buried together.

My grandmother, AGNES MAY KNIGHT born in Socorro in 1906-maybe~ as AGNES MAY
DECKER, family moved to Curry County and stayed. She had a sister BESSIE HOSKINS
that died in a car/motorcycle accident in 1927 or thereabouts. My
grandmother's parents BRITTON HOSKINS and NELLIE LUCRETIA HOSKINS...I know
very little, only that he died of TB at about age 24. I know there was a 2nd
marriage to a Decker w/ 4 half siblings. Among those were twin boys, Francis
and Earl, Earl died as a young child I'm told.
My grandmother was married several times and I would love to have info
especially on a CHITWOOD that I remember made me feel special when I was very
young. I vaguely remember he was very sick, maybe cancer and one day an
ambulance came and took him and I never saw him again (or heard about him). I
missed him so, but can't find anything. He would have died 30some year ago.
Thank you to anyone with information. Have a good day!
