Pam Smith. Saturday, December 27, 1997 12:47 AM Seeking info on W.T. Sam ANDERSON, son Edward ANDERSON b. 06-02-1906, d. 01-16-1979 in Clovis, Curry Co., NM. married Fannie SHERIDAN. Pam Smith

December 14, 1997. I am seeking information re my father, Clovis Vaughn MCCLUSKEY, and his parents, my grandparents. Clovis was born ca 1903-1905 in the vicinity of Clovis and Vaughn, NM and was named after those towns. He enlisted in the Army on February 19, 1924 and was discharged for minority in CA, on October 18, 1924. He stayed on in CA and married my mother in November 1925. They were separated and then divorced in about 1930 or 1931 and we lost track of him, although we do know that he died in an automobile accident in about 1957. He had a younger brother, named Wayne W. MCCLUSKEY, of whom nothing is known. His father was named Mastin L. MCCLUSKEY and his mother named Elizabeth J. MCCLUSKEY. Mastin and Elizabeth were still residing in Clovis, NM as late as 1928, because I have a letter from Mastin dated July 5, 1928, with the letterhead, "McCluskey's Garage and Filling Station, Camp Ground and Cabins, 714 West 7th Street, Clovis, N.M." I know nothing of Mastin after that. Elizabeth ultimately moved to Sherman, TX and I visited her there in 1950. Mastin was not with her at that time. She died just short of her 106th birthday in 1974. I would appreciate any information that anyone can give me about any of these MCCLUSKEYS.

Clovis Vaughn McCluskey, Jr., clovism@pobox.com

December 15, 1997.... I have located the following on the McCluskey family: Listed in the 1932 City of Clovis Directory: McCLUSKEY, M. L. , 713 Thornton; McCluskey Filling Sta.; Mrs. Elizabeth McCluskey, wife. McCLUSKEY service station is listed at 721 W. 7th McCLUSKEY, Miss Oma, 201 E. Grand. There are no McCLUSKEY's listed in the 1936, 1939 and 1941 Clovis City Directory. They evidently moved from the area between 1932 And 1936. William M. McCluskey and Gladys M. Hill were married July 22, 1920; Curry County Bk. 3, p. 105. (This should be William Wayne McCluskey.) A tombstone in the cemetery out on west 7th in Clovis reads: Patsy Ruth McCluskey, daughter of W. W. McCluskey and Gladys Marie Hill. No dates. Curry County record of property taxes paid in 1909 shows a M. L. McClusky, (p. 642 in the Brown Book) N2 SE1/4 S22 T2 R35. This would indicate a homesteader or buying out a homesteader. Note that McClusky is not spelled the way you spell it ;however, I think this may be your grandfather because you state that your father was born 1903-1905. The original town site for Clovis was purchased in October of 1906 and the first building was built in May of 1907. So if he was born about the time frame you have, your grandfather had to have been in this area before Clovis was built. When Clovis was built it was in Roosevelt County. It is a wonder that you did not refer to it as Riley Switch. Tax records before 1909 and birth records (if recorded) should be in Portales, the county seat of Roosevelt County. If not there you might check at the state level. Vaughn, NM has had a post office since 1907. It also was Built by the Santa Fe Railroad when it was built through about 1905 or 1906. Vaughn did not have water for drinking. The Santa Fe Railroad had to haul water into Vaughn until water could be piped about twenty miles. It looks like the first Clovis Vaughn McCluskey was born from Oct. 1906 or the first part of 1907. (or later)

Glendon Farmer. December 10, 1997. I am looking to find relatives of a James "Jim" FARMER around the Clovis, NM area who can help me find information on Jim and especially who were the parents of Jim. The parents of Jim FARMER were thought to be Robert Lee FARMER and Rebecca Ann WILSON. Jim and his twin brothers, Crittenden and Littleton, and older brother John W. FARMER were born probably in Scott Co. AR in the Waldron area. The boys became orphans between 1851 and 1860 because both parents died supposedly of Measles. The boys were raised in different households after this. Jim eventually ended up in the area of Mountainair,NM and later, Clovis, we have been told. We are desperately trying to find who the real parents of this Jim FARMER were. I believe this Jim was born between 1835 and 1850. He had one daughter and I believe a son. I have no knowledge of the wife's name. The parents of Jim FARMER would also be a great grandfather of mine. If anyone can help me locate Jim's relatives in the area, e-mail me at gfarmer@mail.snider.net. Thanks

December 6, 1997. I am seeking information on the place of burial, family and descendants of Epamonondas BROOKS who married Martha Jane HOWARD in Mineola, Wood Co., TX in 1880. He died in Clovis, Curry Co., NM on 7 July 1913. Mary Ann Hanson Maise@continet.com

Sunday, November 30, 1997 5:21 AM. I am Interested in any information on Nancy DAVIS b circa 1850 who married an Unknown LOVELL and had the following five children: Ada, Emma/Amma, Johnny, Joe, and George. Second she married "Red" CLARK and had Elbert b 1885 and Estella Mae b 1889. She passed away suddenly, perhaps w/tubal pregnancy while travelling through near Mabank, TX in Kaufman Co/Van Zandt Co, TX area. Her husband died of pneumonia within a day or so and relatives could not be found to take in the children. The Lovell children were apparently staying with relatives at the time, but Lovells could provide no helpful info, apparently, about Davis and Clark relatives. All we know is Nancy Davis was probably of Indian ancestry and "Red" Clark was a big burly red head and covered w/scars that must have been from battle or knife fights. May have been a gambler. May have travelled from Albuquerque just prior to coming to TX. Ada Lovell married an E. T. JERNIGAN and used to correspond w/Elbert & Estella Mae Clark, her half-siblings. Was last heard from in Clovis, NM in the 1920's or so. Emma/Amma married a MCIVOR last heard from in Battle Creek, Michigan and all the boys served in some branch of the service, apparently. Joe was a marine. Have photos of Ada LOVELL, LOVELL boys in uniform, and Elbert and Estella Mae CLARK. Any and all info on Davis, Clark, or Lovell would be appreciated. I am looking for info and/or desendents of John Hewell TAYLOR(Jack) b. 1850 in Meigs Co, TN m. Catherine HOLBROOK. They had the following children: Myrtle M, Willie L, Jesse E, Clifton, Daisy I, Claude R. John Hewell's parents were Stephen A. TAYLOR and Elizabeth E. WHITE. His siblings were: Alva A, William A, Grace Elizabeth, Alexander Rice, and Abram Wantland. The family left TN ca 1879 and went to OK. John Hewell died ca. 1920 in or near Clovis, NM. Does he have any relatives still in the area? Does anyone know where he is buried?

Answer - Nov. 5, 1997

Sherry Pollard

A J. H. Taylor paid taxes on the NE1/4, S25, T7, R35, Precinct No. 7, Grady, NM, Territory of New Mexico in 1909. Also in the Grady Precinct No. 7 on R25, T7, R35 on the NW1/4 is listed a W. L. Taylor. I would seam that they homesteaded about the same time.

In the Grady, New Mexico cemetery there is a tombstone which reads:

TAYLOR, John Hewell, Mar. 6, 1850 - July 13, 1927; Catherine, Aug. 20, 1857 - Feb. 26, 1922.

Marjie (Riley) Lebens Tue Apr 22 09:41:37 1997
I am looking for any information pertaining to Sidney BOYKIN. Sidney was my great uncle. His father was S. R. BOYKIN, born 26 July 1824 in Alabama, died 19 Jun 1903 in Hico (Hamilton Co) TX. His mother's name is unknown, but may have been Emily MEADOR. Sidney BOYKIN died 15 March 1933 at 3:30 p.m. in the hospital in Clovis (Curry Co) New Mexico of Pneumonia. His funeral was held at 2:30 p.m. in Clovis (Curry Co) NM on 17 March 1933, and I am assuming he was buried there. I have a photo of him taken on his ranch outside Clovis in about 1926. My grandmother, Amanda Emily BOYKIN/BARCROFT RILEY was his sister. When the children were small (and we believe there were 4 of them) their mother died and their father, S. R. BOYKIN, could not care for them. Their mother's wish was that they be placed with families in the Hico TX area. My grandmother was sent to live with L. O. and Sarah BARCROFT, when she was about 4 years old (she was born in April, 1864), and they formally adopted her when she was 8 (in 1872). I have a copy of her adoption record. I have literally been looking for this family for 15 years and would really appreciate any help anyone might be able to give me. Thanks so much in advance, and happy searching to all! --------------See below reply to the Boykin query:

Marjie Riley Lebens:

Sidney J. (Sid) Boykin, a pioneer cattleman of Curry County, New Mexico was born in Erath County, Texas, on December 16, 1861. His parents were S. R. and Emily (Medford) Boykin. Sid was one of seven children, having three brothers and three sisters.

On November 18, 1895, Sid married Elizabeth Walters. Mrs. Boykin, called "Lizzie", was born near the banks of the Ruidoso River, nine miles from old Lincoln, NM in the year of 1869. She was only nine when she first saw Billy the Kid, who frequently came to her father's ranch.

Sid and Lizzie ranched near Portales Springs for six or seven years, then moved to the Frio Draw in present Curry County in 1902. The ranch was located on the draw above the DeOlivera Ranch.

In 1918, Sid along with Joe Wilkinson, and others, started the Farmers State Bank in Clovis. Sid was the president of that institution. This bank didn't last long. Sid then joined the Citizens Bank of Clovis, becoming its vice-president.

Sid and Lizzie's home in Clovis was at 400 Sheldon and they lived there until their death. Sid died on March 15, 1933, his wife died on September 6, 1952. They had no children. When Mrs. Boykin died she left the balance of her estate to the Christian Church in Clovis.

The above is from the Curry County History book published in 1978.

Below in the tombstone inscriptions on page 547 in the High Plains History book published in 1980 is recorded the following:

BOYKIN, S.J., Dec. 16, 1861-Mar. 15, 1933; Lizzie, Nov., 22, 1869-Sept. 6, 1952.

Sid Boykin was mentioned several more places in these two publications.
